Depression – Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help!

Unfortunately, depression, anxiety, other psychiatric disorders, and suicide are more common in the LGBTQ community than in the general population. Because of this, it is imperative that you seek help if you start to feel depressed (or other mood/psychiatric changes). Although a licensed professional (psychiatrist, therapist, counselor, etc.) would be the ideal person to turn to, that is not always a possibility. To my LGBTQ family: talking to close friends and family can help you feel better and they can in turn help you find resources to solve the root of the problem. To allies of LGBTQ individuals: be aware that these mental health problems are more prevalent in this community and be on the lookout for warning signs so that you can help the people that you care about. Does anyone else have advice for dealing with depression or other mental health problems?
